Three things to take on a remote island? One of my top three would probably be my NutriBullet! I’m the happiest when sipping on a fresh green smoothie, a creamy date milkshake or a refreshing gazpacho. I’m also a massive fan of iced coffee during the summer months and my newest obsession is of course blended in my NutriBullet: a smooth, creamy coffee on ice with a hint of dark chocolate.
Make sure to use good quality, raw cacao powder and avoid cocoa powder, which contains sugar and is usually highly processed. Cacao is super high in antioxidants, magnesium and iron – the best excuse to add some cacao powder to overnight oats, porridge or precisely your iced coffee for an indulgent yet healthy chocolate breakfast.
1 small frozen banana
1 shot of espresso
2.5dl oat milk
1 tsp cacao powder
ice cubes
Serves 1
I recommend using a NutriBullet or any other strong blender to make sure the coffee is perfectly smooth. It also works with a hand blender, it will take a bit longer to bring everything together though.
- Add the frozen banana to a blender, along with the freshly brewed espresso, oat milk and cacao powder.
- Blend until smooth.
- Pour into a glass over some ice cubes and sprinkle with cacao powder. Enjoy!
Optional:
Where can I buy frozen bananas? Don’t buy them, it’s the easiest thing to prepare yourself. I always go on the hunt for bananas which are on offer in the supermarket at the end of the day because they’re already too ripe to still be sold. Peel, cut into rough chunks and fill a Tupperware or Ziploc bag, place in the freezer. Besides this iced mocha, frozen bananas are amazing in milkshakes, smoothies or blended on its own for banana ice cream.
Not a fan of slightly sweet coffee? Only use 1/2 banana and add some more ice cubes instead. Don’t worry though, this recipe is a lot less sweet than any store-bought iced coffee and I really urge you to try it, it’s so refreshing.
Sceptical about the coffee – cacao combo? Coffee really brings out the best in chocolate, and chocolate adds some more depth to your iced coffee. If you’d rather leave out the cacao powder, try a good pinch of cinnamon instead – so delicious as well!
